2020’s Biggest Hair Trends
It’s “New year, new hair” time again – so of course you can count on us to share some of the biggest predicted hair trends of 2020. Whether you’re looking for inspiration to switch up your own ‘do, or you’re just curious to see what’s going to be hot this year, keep reading for all the industry gossip we could get our hands on…
1. Soft, blunt bobs
Bobs have always had mixed reviews. Nobody can quite make up their minds whether they’re prepared for the chop or not, but a fair few famous and not-so-famous faces have rocked a bob and looked incredible for it. If your face is lucky enough to suit a bob, you’ll be happy to know that soft, blunt bobs are set to be back in this year.
2. Curtain bangs (or layers for us Brits!)
Retro hair makes regular reappearances in the modern hair world, so it’s hardly surprising that curtain bangs, framing hair just below ear-length on either side of the face, are predicted to pop by yet again for 2020. You might even see some braver people rocking the curtain fringe – although we think we’ll leave that one in the past.
3. Natural length
Hair products have come a long way since their questionable debut some 50 years ago, and we’re now blessed to have so many choices, we couldn’t physically put them all on our hair in one hair care routine. Luckily for us, this means that we can look after our hair like never before, helping it to grow faster and thicker, silkier and shinier. Say goodbye to the hair extensions in 2020 – natural length is the way forward.
4. Pixie cuts
Remember what we were saying about how you’d have to prepare yourself for getting a bob? Multiply this by around 1000 and you’ve got the pixie cut. It takes a very particular face shape to pull off a pixie cut well – and we’re envious of everyone who makes it look fabulous! Those in the know predict that pixie cuts will be everywhere in 2020, thanks to their simple upkeep and edgy aesthetics. Again, we’ll leave it to those who make the cut look good, we think…
5. Mid-parted, mid-length
There’s something very satisfying about hair that parts right in the middle, and falls, well, right to the middle. Mid-length, mid-parted hair is set to be a simple, er, happy medium in 2020, giving a great alternative for people who are sick of their long hair but too scared to go for a full chop. A blunt cut that lands just at the collarbones will look best.
6. Curls
Ever since the humble roller was first invented, the obsession with non-naturally curly hair has been growing and fading, growing and fading year-by-year. It’s great to see that curls are back in again for 2020 – but not the limp sort that fall out after a couple of hours. It’s the textured, bouncy, perm-style curls that will be all the range in 2020. If you want to try the look out for yourself, you’ll need some decent rollers and a whole array of hair products that actually work.
7. The modified mullet
Here’s a hair trend we’re not so sure of – and we weren’t even sure of the first-time round. Whatever you think of the mullet, we’ve seen it come back in fits and bursts over the course of 2019, and 2020 seems set to be the year it makes its proper female debut. The modified mullet will look closer to a shag cut, with a short fringe and longer lengths at the front, but still a big difference between front and back. Not for us, thanks.
8. Dip-dye ends
Thought we’d left dip-dye well and truly back in 2012? It looks like that’s all set to change for 2020 – and the good thing is that improved colours and practices mean dip-dye will actually look good this time around. That’s not to say there won’t still be the odd few people who give dip-dye a go on their own, without the help of a hairdresser, who might end up regretting the look. But with a bit of professional assistance, dip-dye will be able to take off for the right reasons in 2020.
