Why you should start eating more of this unusual ingredient for healthy hair

When it comes to hair, there are so many foods and substances, far more than you would imagine, that can have a positive impact on your hair when consumed or directly applied. But did you know that sardines were one of them?

That’s right, eating sardines will increase the rate of hair growth and enhance its radiance. And why is this? Sardines, as expected, come fully loaded with protein, as well as iron, zinc, and vitamin B12. But, more importantly, they are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a form of healthy fat that your body is unable to produce on its own, and the vitamin D, which have been linked to preventing hair-loss. A study published in the “Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology” in 2012 found that taking a supplement of omega-3 fatty acids for 90 days led to improved hair volume and thickness in women with thinning hair.

We understand that sardines aren’t for everyone. You might be wondering whether it’s really worth learning to love the damn things just to give your hair that extra bit of shine and thickness. But you’ll be happy to know that sardines are versatile, and you can find them canned in water, oil or tomato sauce in most shops. They can be seasoned with all sorts of sauces and spices, if you want to mask the fishy flavours. You could alternatively take fish oil supplements, but, like all supplements, the effects wouldn’t be anywhere near as good from doing this as from consuming the real thing.

So, how many sardines should you eat a day to see a difference? Even upping your intake of the fish to twice or three times a week should make a difference to thinning, dull hair. If you were to be extra-committed, and eat a can a day, you would admittedly see an even bigger difference, but sticking to two to three portions a week is plenty.
