Autumn Haircuts For The New Season
Well, that’s it for summer – September’s here. We might get two randomly hot days later this month, but for the most part, we need to be accepting of the inevitable truth: winter is coming.
But before that, we still have autumn to look forward to. While our imaginings of pumpkin picking at an Instagram-worthy farm, sipping pumpkin spice lattes every morning and baking many pies might not be too accurate (the reality is likely to be that we spend more time in bed, watching re-runs of FRIENDS), it’s still nice to mark in the new season with a subtle change. And there’s no better subtle change than a haircut.
Read on for a few of the predicted popular haircuts for autumn (or fall, if you’re American) 2020.
1. Lob
We wrote a blog post about lobs way back when, and it seems they’ll be making a comeback this autumn. A lob is, as the name suggests, a long version of a standard bob haircut. It’s a great middle-ground if you’re not keen to chop off so much hair to be considered a bob, while still having the characteristics of a bob (the bluntness, etc). Model Chrissy Teigen recently showcased a lob, and we all know that when celebrities do it, so does everyone else.
2. Razor dusting
In hairstylists’ terms, “dusting” is the act of taking off split ends or dead or dying tips without trimming any of the healthy hair. If you’re trying to grow your hair, it’s likely that your hairdresser uses dusting to only get rid of the bad stuff when you pay a visit. But what’s apparently set to be popular this year is razor dusting, which, you won’t be surprised to learn, is dusting with a razor. There’s essentially no difference between razor dusting and regular dusting with scissors, though some razor experts may be able to create a bluntness that scissors aren’t always capable of.
3. Feathered bangs
Bangs (or layers, depending on what your hairdresser says), go in and out of trend with every passing season, but autumn is a good chance to experiment with them if you’re bored of your all-over long hair. There’s less humidity, so you won’t experience a crazy frizziness that gives you a “bowl cut on top” sort of appearance, and the slightly retro look will pair well with your autumn jeans and jumper combos. Feathered bangs perfectly frame your face, and are often coupled with a centre parting, which allows them to be styled outwards, away from the face.
4. Chocolate chai balayage
We had to throw in a hair colour trend, even though this isn’t technically counted as an “autumn haircut”. As we all know, balayages are one of the most effective techniques for beautiful, natural-looking dyed hair. Many people associate balayages with blonde hair, but this autumn, a “chocolate chai” balayage is set to be all the range. A dark root colour is combined with pale brown off-the-root highlights in the hair, giving a much more caramelly, warm, in-season colour that’s perfect for autumn.
5. Blunt bob
If you dare to go beyond the lob, you’ll be happy to know that blunt bobs are well on-trend this autumn. Short bobs that hit the jawline are predicted to take centre-stage, along with precision cutting – but bobs don’t have to be all one length. The more experimental of us might go for an asymmetric or angular bob, which are particularly face-framing for people who have rounder faces. If you’re looking for a major change and you’re fed up of your straggly post-isolation locks, a short, blunt bob might be exactly the haircut for you.
Final Word
The thing about hair trends is that they’re never really anything more than predictions, made by people who have analysed the models walking the fall fashion runways and tuned into what haircuts the celebrities are getting. Bobs and lobs, for example, always seem to be a predicted trend – which probably just means that they never really go out of trend in the first place.
If you’re looking to switch up your hairstyle for autumn, keep these options in mind. But also speak to your hairdresser, who can provide you with a combination of industry knowledge and personal opinion to help you find a cut that suits you.
