Top Hair Trends of Summer 2020
Summer’s on its way! Okay, it might be a few weeks (months) away yet, but that doesn’t stop us from feeling excited about the recently landed summer hair trend predictions that have made their way onto the internet. If you’re looking for something fun, light-hearted and maybe even inspiring to read – or you just want a break from catching the latest on a certain virus – this post is for you.
So, what’s apparently going to be hot this year (aside from the sun – we hope)?
1. Giant flowers
Marc Jacobs famously did it first with his Daisy perfume bottles, which we shamelessly admit for hoarding based purely on aesthetics alone. Unsurprisingly, it was the Marc Jacobs summer runway that showcased a whole host of OTT flowers on the heads of the catwalk models. Obviously, we’re talking fake flowers, in the form of clip-ons, hair bands, and so on. There was a definite seventies vibe to some of them, too. Interesting…
2. Actual flowers
Marc Jacobs showed us fake blooms, but that didn’t stop various other labels from creatively sticking real flowers into their models’ hair. We have to wonder how practical it would be to saunter round town with half a bouquet of roses in your ponytail, but hey – it’d look pretty while it lasted. Missoni’s runway show saw one model’s hair intricately wrapped around the stem of a pretty bunch of… er… purple things. Very rustic wedding-esque.
3. Two-strand plaits
Say what? you’re thinking. How can you do a two-strand plait? Wouldn’t it just unravel? You would think – but the genius stylists at Ulla Johnson mastered the impossible, and we can see this becoming a huge summer trend. To try out the two-strand plait, more formally known as the rope tail, yourself, simply put your hair in a pony, secure with a bobble, and split into two. Twist each section into a rope, then weave the two sections together. Easy peasy.
4. The messy bun
Messy buns just aren’t for everyone. While we’d all love to be able to throw our hair up in the sort of careless, slapdash style that the likes of Gigi Hadid can get away with, some of us end up looking more like we’ve been dragged backwards through a bush. Still, messy buns are predicted to be in again this summer, so you best get practicing the art of upside-down bobble-yanking – just don’t go at it too hard or you’ll snap the elastic.
5. Boho braids
Thanks to festival season, there will probably never be a summer again that doesn’t end up with braids as a key trending hairstyle. We saw them on the runways once again this year, and it’s pretty much the same deal as always – the two French braids, one on either side of the head. To give the style credit, it does look pretty incredible when it’s done properly, and comes with an added bonus – you won’t need to worry about brushing your hair at all while it’s secured in braids. Which could be for up to a week, if you wanted to be kind of gross.
6. Contrasting hair colours
Remember the days when one daring shade of hair dye was enough? Well, the people have spoken, and for summer 2020, they demand more creativity. One particular celebrity hairstylist has predicted that contrasting bold dyes will be the in thing for the season, especially mix-and-match pastel shades, and highlights that look like something from the nineties.
7. Shaggy bobs
There will always be a place in the world for a shaggy bob – and if your face is a fortunate enough shape for you to suit one, work it for all it’s worth. Apparently, the style will take on a fresh look this summer, and instead of clean cuts, we’ll see a lot more creativity with jagged edges, for a more layered, rough-and-ready texture. It looks a lot nicer than it sounds; you’ll have to take our word on that.
8. Jet black tones
When paired with the right skin tone, jet black hair is everything. It’s glossy, it looks expensive, and it somehow makes hair look sleek even when it isn’t. It’s also the Kardashian hair colour, which is probably why, just like the reality TV stars, it’s in trend more than out. Just make sure that if you plan to follow the jet black hair trend this summer, you know what you’re getting in for. It’s also nearly always a terrible idea to dye naturally blonde hair black. Look at pictures if you need clarification.
