Ten of the strangest hair hacks that actually work! (according to the internet)

We’ve all experienced nightmare situations when our hair isn’t behaving and we’re running out of time/options to save it. While admitting defeat and giving in might feel like your only option, more often than not, there are things you can do – things you’d never think to do – might just save the day. Here are the top five internet-proven hair hacks that are surprisingly beneficial to your hair (note: many of these are slightly hilarious, and not scientifically proven):

1.       Mayo-itioner

If you’ve never before discovered you’re completely out of conditioner only when you’re standing naked in the shower, you’re some sort of saint of pre-purchase organisation. Oh, and you may as well skip this hair hack. But for the rest of us, never fear: you can simply switch your usual stuff for a palm-load of something you’re more than likely to have sitting in the fridge… mayonnaise. That’s right, the stuff you’d usually have with your chips (if you’re not team ketchup, that is).

It’s the eggs in mayonnaise that are said to be so effective in conditioning your hair, so what are you waiting for? Get lathering from root to tip, leave for 20 minutes, then wash and style as normal. Your hair should be as shiny and glossy as if you’d used the real thing.

2.       Crushed aspirin for dullness

You might be more familiar with using aspirin to treat a headache from time to time, but it turns out it’s pretty handy for external use, too. According to the internet, crushing up one or two tablets and adding them to your shampoo during your hair washing routine should do your hair a world of good, thanks to the acid content in the aspirin. Keep up with the habit every two weeks, and your hair should apparently be far shinier and healthier looking.

3.       Cornstarch dry shampoo

It’s usually impossible to go your whole life without experiencing a touch of greasy hair every now and again, which is why dry shampoo can be such a saviour for when you’re on the go and don’t have time for a full wash. What happens if you’re out and about without your trusty Batiste, though?

Cornstarch, apparently. All you have to do is raid your kitchen cupboards for this random baking ingredient, before massaging it into your roots as you would dry shampoo. Then, the cornstarch should apparently work its magic in the same manner that dry shampoo would.

4.       Baking soda paste

On the subject of random baking ingredients… introducing baking soda. This little gem apparently succeeds in more than just helping cakes to… er, taste cakey. You can also use it to create an appealing DIY hair paste to treat an itchy scalp.

That’s right, if you’re prone to bad bouts of dandruff, all you need to do is mix a couple of tablespoons of baking soda with water to create a pasty texture, before letting it sit for up to ten minutes and washing it off. This should improve scalp health, sooth irritation and help you to wave goodbye to your dandruff issue.

5.       Washing up liquid for removing colour

We’ve pretty much all been there – can’t afford to visit the hairdresser for a colour touch-up, or spontaneously decide that a massive change is underway, and voila! Out comes the at-home hair dye box. There’s nothing necessarily wrong with most home dyes, but the biggest issue is that they don’t always come out exactly how they appear on the model shot. That can mean ending up with a severely darker colour than you were expecting, which isn’t exactly the cheapest thing to fix. Luckily for you, there’s a handy little kitchen essential just waiting to help you out with your hair woes: washing up liquid.

Apparently, simply adding some of this to your regular shampoo should help to strip the colour a little, and if it’s a natural product, it shouldn’t contain chemicals that damage your hair, either.

Here comes the disclaimer…

Everyone loves a fun hair hack, but sometimes, the easiest solution is to buy the product/consult your doctor/visit the hair salon. Don’t believe every hair hack you read about on the internet, especially the more dangerous sounding ones. Always do your research before you give something a go – although you might just be surprised at what works!
