Flamingo pixel hair: everything you need to know about this new viral trend

We've had butterbeer hair, ombré hair, and today, we're bringing you the news of something even more extra: flamingo pixel hair. You know we love our hair trends, so when a viral video popped up on our phones featuring Rapunzel-length, jet black hair that, when parted, reveals two canoodling flamingos, we had to find out more about its origin.

Apparently, the crazy hairstyle is the brainchild of hair colourist and educator Cristina Vigna, and her unique, pixelated application of colour definitely isn't a task for a hairdressing novice. Judging by one of her Instagram photos of the completed hairdo, Cristina had a  hard time finishing the masterpiece herself, writing in the caption: "This is final results of sleepless nights... my brain has melted... but now I’m the happiest person in the world!" (sic). We can only imagine the level of skill involved to master the complex pixelated design.

Alongside her famous flamingo-print hair, Cristina has showcased other, similar- but admittedly slightly less impressive- pixelated hairstyles on her Instagram page, including diamonds and other 'abstract prints', as she calls them. And she's not just talented at pixelated hair dying- her work with pastel shades and ombré colouring is pretty cool, too.

Speaking recently in an interview with Allure, Cristina shared the story of how an idea translated onto a piece of paper, which then blossomed into the finished result in her home shop, the Roberto Marcon Hair Boutique.

“I started by studying the patterns that I learned in Madrid and drew them on graph paper," she said. "The starting point had been very difficult, I had many sleepless nights and my mind melted because I could not figure out the flamingo pattern.”

Did she ever think she would create a trend that would kick off like it did? Probably not. But having already tried out a few other pixelated designs, even once combing the technique with a rainbow ombré, it sounds like until other hairdressers decide to learn the skill as well, Cristina is going to be one busy lady. And with the flamingo being the 'it' bird of the summer, we don't think it will be long until we see more similar designs popping up all over Instagram.
